Traveling to Patagonia in winter is an unforgettable experience: snow-covered landscapes, quiet trails, and a deep connection with nature. But it also requires solid preparation for the cold, wet conditions and challenging terrain. If you’re planning a winter trek, like our Winter W Trek, here are the essentials you’ll need in your backpack.

Layering: the golden rule

In Patagonia, layering isn’t just a tip — it’s a rule for survival. The weather can shift in minutes, and having at least three functional layers will help you stay warm and dry without overheating.

  • Base layer: thermal underwear that retains body heat and wicks away moisture. This layer should be breathable to keep you dry while moving.
  • Mid layer: provides insulation. A fleece or synthetic fiber layer works well to trap body heat.
  • Outer layer (shell): your first line of defense against wind, rain, and snow. It should be waterproof, windproof, and ideally have sealed seams and ventilation.

Down jacket: your best ally in extreme cold

In addition to your waterproof shell, a down jacket is essential for staying warm when you’re not actively moving — during rest breaks, at camp, or in the early morning chill.

Down offers the best warmth-to-weight-to-compression ratio. It’s still the warmest and most lightweight insulating option available. However, down is not waterproof, and if it gets wet, it loses its insulating properties. That’s why you should never wear it alone in the rain or snow, always keep it under your outer shell.

Waterproof hiking boots

In winter, trails may be covered in snow, mud, or water. A solid pair of waterproof, high-ankle hiking boots with strong grip is essential to keep your feet dry and supported.

Gaiters are also highly recommended to keep snow and moisture out of your boots and protect your pants from the elements.

Crampons: for safety on snow and ice

In winter, trails often include icy patches or hard-packed snow. That’s why crampons are a must.

These small devices attach to your boots and provide extra traction through metal spikes that grip into snow and ice. They’re especially important when hiking on sloped or exposed terrain.

Trekking poles: extra balance and support

While not mandatory, trekking poles are extremely useful in winter conditions. They help you maintain balance, reduce impact on your knees, and distribute effort more evenly, especially when ascending or descending in snow.
