This remote, pint-sized town is the “Trekking Capital of Argentina”—and lying within Los Glaciares National Park at the very feet of Mount Fitz Roy, it’s easy to see why. Its name means “smoking mountain” in the Aonikenk language, due to the way the cloud-covered peak reminded locals of a volcano. Pristine and beautiful, the wilderness surrounding El Chaltén straddles the line between steppe and forest and offers numerous adventure and trekking experiences.
