KAYAKING CABO FROWARD (6 DAYS)

Sea Kayaking the Strait of Magellan to the Tip of the American Continent!

Overview

Cape Froward – named for its strong climate, this is the southern tip of the American Continent where the Cruz de los Mares, (Cross of the Seas) stands proudly and visible from afar. This trip takes us further than any road that exists, exploring the Strait of Magellan. During three days of sea kayaking, we explore South America’s immense coast line and impressive waters that only sailors and some brave do by foot until reaching the southernmost point of the continent. Each night we’ll camp on the shores at remote backcountry locations where we will have the privilege of admiring the incredibly diverse flora and fauna found only in these parts of the region. Hike to the summit of Monte Tarn, which offers extraordinary views of the Strait of Magellan and it’s break taking landscapes. An adventure that entices all the senses, we’ll have opportunities to kayak alongside whales, Austral dolphins, and a wide array of birdlife & waterfowl. We’ll end our adventure with a traditional Patagonian lamb asado (BBQ) and an incredible night’s rest in the comfort and grandeur of Hotel Cabo de Hornos in Punta Arenas.

• Kayak the Strait of Magellan
• Visit the southernmost point of the American Continent
• Hike to the Oceans Cross of the Seas Monument on Cape Froward

Later in the evening, you’ll meet up with your guide and any other group members traveling along in this adventure to enjoy a welcome dinner in downtown Punta Arenas. After sharing a wonderful meal and great company, your guide will brief you on your journey and each day’s  itinerary for the following days ahead.

Any questions you might have – our experienced professional guide will be there to assist! After dinner and the briefing, head back to your hotel to relax and enjoy a quiet night’s rest.

Day 2

Hike Monte Tarn & Lamb BBQ

  • 1 Hour Private Transfer
  • 7-8 Hour Hike, 14 km / 8.7 mi
  • Night at Punta del Arbol Campsite (Single Tent) (B-BL-BBQ)

Following breakfast in our hotel, a private transfer will pick us up taking us 1 hour to the start of our trek. Today’s hike takes us to a historical place which has a landscape of evergreen forest, great mountains, and lots of flora and fauna. On a journey of exploration, Charles Darwin was the first person to climb this mountain now known as Monte Tarn. At our camp, we complete a short briefing before preparing for our ascent.

Hiking about 6 miles (9.5 km) to reach the top, we’ll stay about 45 minutes, contemplating and enjoying our lunch accompanied by incredible views. We’ll start our descent and enjoy the view of the Strait of Magellan and large islands below us. This trek will have a variety of flora, evergreen forest, wildlife and weather conditions which is part of the region’s typical climate (wind, rain or snow).

After about 7 hours we arrive at the beach again, where we take a 45 minute transfer to Estancia Agua Fresca, where we will have a lamb barbecue, Patagonian style as a celebration of this amazing hike. Afterwards, we’ll drive to our location where we’ll begin our kayaking excursion the following day. Here, we’ll camp at a remote coastline campsite.

Day 3

Full Day Sea Kayak Strait of Magellan

  • 1 Hour Private Transfer
  • 6-7 Hours Sea Kayaking
  • Night at San Nicolas Bay Campsite (Single Tents) (B-BL-D)

In the morning following breakfast in our camp, we’ll begin our kayaking excursion. We’ll prepare all our gear and complete a thorough safety briefing before heading out. During our excursion we will use a support zodiac boat for safety and to transport our food and equipment to our stopping point of rest.

After about 2 hours we reach San Isidro lighthouse where we pass by and continue to El Aguila Bay, where we prepare lunch and visit the ruins in this place which used to function as a whale station in the Magellan Strait, more than 100 years ago. After lunch we continue following the shore heading southwest until we reach San Nicolas bay where we will make our campsite, and take time to relax, explore a bit on land and have a try at catching our dinner from the sea! If we are lucky we can share this along with a great bottle of Chilean wine for dinner.

Full Day Sea Kayak Strait of Magellan

  • 6-7 Hours Sea Kayaking
  • Night at San Rosas Bay Campsite (Single Tents) (B-BL-D)

Our third day continues as we advance our kayaking skills and start exploring more unprotected shores. We begin to see changes while we get closer to the end of the continent – a place where many sailors have had to give up and surrender to the roughness of these waters. We will make our campsite at Rosas Bay just a few kilometers from Cape Froward and if we have good luck with the weather, we will continue to Cape Froward this same day.

Day 5

Hike to the End of the American Continent – Navigation to Punta Arbol Campsite

We’ll walk 340 meters high (1,115 ft.) to the cross before starting our return to board the zodiac boat which will take us back to where we camped the first night.

On our way back we will stop at the San Isidro lighthouse to visit the restored building and some small displays of ancient pieces before heading back to our hotel for the evening to enjoy our final dinner together as a group and a well-deserved night’s rest.

Amazing trip! We joined the Torres Del Paine 7 day O trek tour - note that this tour is not a complete O Trek but skipping the part from Camp Frances to Las Torres, which worked in our favour as our holiday is limited and we won’t miss much. Our guide, Debbie was knowledgeable and amicable, and very passionate about hiking. Unfortunately I fell sick during the hike and wished to leave a day earlier than planned. Debbie and Chile Nativo quickly rearranged transportation for us and was very helpful. Throughout the whole process Chile Nativo was very responsive. We had a memorable journey and I would highly recommend Chile Nativo.

Fantastic experience! We were booked with Chile Nativo via Swoop and had a wonderful experience. Our guides, Tim & Lucile, were awesome. We really enjoyed their company. They were very knowledgeable about the region (the history, animals, landscape, etc). Highly recommend.

I booked the independent, self-guided Torres Del Paine trek with Chile Nativo’s help and was so glad I did. When I looked to book on my own, everything was all reserved in Torres Del Paine and Chile Nativo was the only agency that could help me find a spot still. To still be able to go on the trip when I wanted to go, to not have to spend so much time planning all the logistics, to get a local’s recommendations on the best way to do the trek…but STILL get to do the trek on my own was amazing and worth every penny. In particular Paolina at the agency was incredibly helpful. I would recommend this agency to anyone looking to hike in Torres del Paine.

Hiking in Torres with Pepa is like walking with your smartest and wisest friend. She has an incredible depth of knowledge in everything from mycology to government, from geology to history. She is fiercely passionate about conservation and our planet and has dedicated her life to making our world a better place. Our two porters Filipe and Bastian were both incredibly strong and highly professional. Always in the know on where to set up the tent, they picked the best spot in every site we were at. Also, they were an absolute blast to hang out with after the long days hiking. I cannot recommend this particular team highly enough and if you are passionate about the environment, making the world a better place, learning everything there is to know about glaciers, mushrooms, Patagonia, the history of Chile, magma intrusions and edible berries request them by name. Thank you to all three of you for making our experience so special and I hope our paths cross again.
