An excursion to the impressive corners of the Kawésqar National Park

INFORMACION GENERAL

Navigating the Canal de las Montañas is a new experience in Southern Patagonia taking the capacity for wonder to the next level! In a full-day excursion aboard the Fiordos del Sur II catamaran experience the impressive corners of the Kawésqar National Park located 3 hours from Puerto Natales by boat. With an extension of more than 50 kilometers, the channels and fjords of these mountains offer incredible views of the Roca Peninsula and its cliffs, magnificent views of the glaciers that break off from the Sarmiento Mountain Range and its snow-capped peaks. (1.520 masl), an inactive volcano stratum covered in ice located in the Sarmiento Peninsula 90 kilometers from Puerto Natales.
Five glaciers that detached from the Cordillera Sarmiento compose the Montaña Fjord’s principal structure. From South to North are the Zamudio, Bernal, Herman, Alsina and Paredes Glaciers.
These ice giants’ surroundings are mainly characterized by moraines, cliffs, evergreen forests and a variety of snow and ice covered peaks. The contrast is notorious in the front mountain range, where greater verticality, less forest, and cracked walls rise 1,500 meters above sea level in the Roca Peninsula. The first stop is in front of Zamudio Glacier. From the boat, observe the ice colossus, its structure forming a small bay with a rocky bottom, evergreen forest on the south face and rocky slopes on the opposite face.
Next, visit Bernal Glacier Landmark. The access is more exposed and has a lagoon formed by melting ice on its front face, transferring water through small and colorful tributaries with rocks and low-lying vegetation towards the fjord.

We’ll begin today’s exciting adventure early in order to arrive to the pier – located just a few minutes away from the Costaustralis Hotel along the coast of Puerto Natales by 6:30AM for check-in aboard the Fiordos del Sur II catamaran where we are welcomed by the crew. After a welcome introduction and and safety briefing, we will set sail by 7AM in the Almirante Montt Gulf towards the White or Kirke Passes. White Pass will take us through the Santa María Channel in front of Cordillera Riesco’s jutting peaks. We will be served breakfast to enjoy as we set off on our navigation.

After about three hours navigating the still fjord waters, we will observe the mythical Mount Burney  jutting 1,520 meters above sea level. Now an inactive volcano stratum covered in ice, it’s located in the Sarmiento Peninsula 90 kilometers from Puerto Natales.

By afternoon, we’ll enjoy lunch aboard our navigation as we quietly take in the views.

On board we will enjoy hot beverages and snacks during our navigation as we capture once-in-a-lifetime views of this rarely explored territory.

The duration of this excursion is 11 hours total and we’ll arrive back to Puerto Natales around 6PM.

Amazing trip! We joined the Torres Del Paine 7 day O trek tour - note that this tour is not a complete O Trek but skipping the part from Camp Frances to Las Torres, which worked in our favour as our holiday is limited and we won’t miss much. Our guide, Debbie was knowledgeable and amicable, and very passionate about hiking. Unfortunately I fell sick during the hike and wished to leave a day earlier than planned. Debbie and Chile Nativo quickly rearranged transportation for us and was very helpful. Throughout the whole process Chile Nativo was very responsive. We had a memorable journey and I would highly recommend Chile Nativo.

Fantastic experience! We were booked with Chile Nativo via Swoop and had a wonderful experience. Our guides, Tim & Lucile, were awesome. We really enjoyed their company. They were very knowledgeable about the region (the history, animals, landscape, etc). Highly recommend.

I booked the independent, self-guided Torres Del Paine trek with Chile Nativo’s help and was so glad I did. When I looked to book on my own, everything was all reserved in Torres Del Paine and Chile Nativo was the only agency that could help me find a spot still. To still be able to go on the trip when I wanted to go, to not have to spend so much time planning all the logistics, to get a local’s recommendations on the best way to do the trek…but STILL get to do the trek on my own was amazing and worth every penny. In particular Paolina at the agency was incredibly helpful. I would recommend this agency to anyone looking to hike in Torres del Paine.

Hiking in Torres with Pepa is like walking with your smartest and wisest friend. She has an incredible depth of knowledge in everything from mycology to government, from geology to history. She is fiercely passionate about conservation and our planet and has dedicated her life to making our world a better place. Our two porters Filipe and Bastian were both incredibly strong and highly professional. Always in the know on where to set up the tent, they picked the best spot in every site we were at. Also, they were an absolute blast to hang out with after the long days hiking. I cannot recommend this particular team highly enough and if you are passionate about the environment, making the world a better place, learning everything there is to know about glaciers, mushrooms, Patagonia, the history of Chile, magma intrusions and edible berries request them by name. Thank you to all three of you for making our experience so special and I hope our paths cross again.

Our Torres Del Paine Plus trip was fantastic! A great crew of newly-made friends, guided by Izabella “La Professora”, on a journey beyond expectations. What a great time, a balance of hiking and touring. DO NOT miss the pumas!!! I will definitely go with the Chile Nativo team again, and thanks to Nestor & Juan too!
