Day 3 - Self guided hike through the spectacular Francés Valley and Lake Pehoé
Today, you’ll embark on a challenging hike to the heart of the Paine Massif. The Francés Valley is a spectacular natural basin surrounded by peaks and hanging glaciers.
After breakfast, request your packed lunch at the refuge and start a 2-hour hike along a winding trail to the Francés River (one hour if your accommodation was at Francés Domes).
At the entrance of the Francés Valley, a glacial moraine, you’ll climb over large rocks and catch your first glimpse of the hanging glacier at the top of the valley.
From this point, you’ll ascend for an hour through a dreamlike Japanese garden landscape before reaching the Francés Valley viewpoint, La Plateau.
The reward is a panoramic view of the granite peaks and hanging glaciers. On one side, you’ll see the Francés Glacier and Paine Grande (3,050 m/10,006 ft.), while on the other side, La Espada, La Hoja, La Máscara, and the main and northern horns of Los Cuernos curve upwards. In the upper section of the valley, Cerro Catedral and Cerro Fortaleza rise like towers over the landscape.
Take your time to enjoy lunch at the viewpoint, surrounded by these towering peaks and wide-open skies.
If time and energy levels allow, you can continue hiking for another hour through the valley to the British Camp, where you’ll enjoy another spectacular cirque (amphitheater-like formation) of mountains.

Before continuing, we recommend stopping by your refuge to leave your luggage. Afterward, you can continue on to the Grey Glacier viewpoint and enjoy lunch with the wonderful view awaiting you.

Independent hikers without guides can only reach the second hanging bridge.
Remember, you must book your optional excursion in advance with one of our travel specialists.
Regardless of your choice, you will then return on foot along the same path to Paine Grande to take the last catamaran crossing of Lake Pehoe (check the catamaran and hiking schedules with the refuge staff in the morning to ensure you arrive on time).
During the walk, you’ll be able to admire views of Paine Grande and the imposing, muscular granite walls of the Olguín Cordillera. On the other side of Lake Pehoe, a public bus will be waiting to take you back to Puerto Natales.

Our traveler’s experiences

Travelling without stress is possible
It was a very pleasant trip, and everything went perfectly. Especially considering the current situation, we were very lucky to be able to enjoy it. Making the reservation was very easy, and it saved us a lot of time and headaches.

More than a trip, an experience to remember
Our trip was fantastic. We booked later than our friends, and the representatives from Chile Nativo were excellent in their efforts to ensure our trip aligned as much as possible with theirs. Very helpful. We had a wonderful night at Los Cuernos, where our cabin was incredible.

Quick solutions for an unforgettable trip
The trip was very well planned, and the information they provided prepared me perfectly. The booking (on very short notice) was easy, and the Chile Nativo staff was very helpful (for example, they gave me information on how to make it work with the time restrictions I had).

Every detail organized for a perfect experience
Everything went smoothly with the bus vouchers, lodge vouchers, and park fees. Everything went well and without issues. For people who enjoy traveling and hiking independently, this is an excellent way to do it with Chile Nativo. Since we don’t speak Spanish, it would have been difficult to organize the logistics of this hike on our own.

A dream trek with the perfect support
Everything was perfect. The trekking is amazing, and without a doubt, it’s one of the best things I’ve done in my life. As for Chile Nativo, they were very professional from the start when I was planning my trip. They answered all my questions about the trail, what to bring, the itinerary… everything. I’m so happy I chose Chile Nativo to plan my trip.

More than a trip, a trust-filled experience
Completing the W was a wonderful experience. Chile Nativo was there supporting us during the preparation and, most importantly, during the trek after my wife got injured. We couldn’t have done it without the support of Chile Nativo.
