With E-Bikes getting a lot of new hype – we’re here to give you the inside scoop.

Most travelers are curious about E-Bikes capabilities. So for starters (and the obvious question) – How fast can an E-Bike go?

The first thing to remember is that even though E-Bikes have a motor, we are still talking about bicycles here. Also important to understand that they are NOT scooters. One of the most frequently asked questions concerning E-Bikes is their speed. In Europe, an E-Bike must have a motor with a maximum power of 250W, assisting the E-Bike to a maximum speed of 25 km/h. In the US (and the types of E-Bikes that Chile Nativo Travel uses), the rules are different. These E-Bike motors can have a max of 500W and assist up to 20MPH (32km/ph). If the pedal support still functions above these limitations, then the bike becomes a so-called speed pedelec (a type of low-powered electric bicycle where the rider’s pedalling is assisted by a small electric motor).

Can the bike go faster than the motor supports?

Well sure, technically. The E-Bike can go as fast as you can pedal, but the motor stops supporting you when you reach the max speed limitation.

With an E-Bike, you have the power to reach a speed that is suitable for your way of riding, whether that’s faster than the motor supports or at a speed that’s lower than the maximum motor support speed. This means it’s an ideal option for any rider – whether experienced or more leisure riders who aren’t looking for speed and agility.

Is riding an E-Bike physically challenging? Do I need prior experience on an E-Bike?

The answer is that you can decide if you want to challenge yourself with an E-Bike. There are several options to push yourself physically if you want to. For example, you can use the E-Bike without any support or in Eco mode and still feel your legs burn. You can ride farther and longer with an E-Bike and you are encouraged by the speed/fun factor. Chile Nativo currently has 7 bikes in 3 different sizes – 2 small, 3 medium, 2 large.

The second part to this question – if you were riding just a regular bike before then empower yourself to ride an E-Bike and reach your adventure limit.

And… If you prefer, you can also empower yourself to simply have a good time and enjoy the ride without any sweat.

What happens to the E-Bike when the battery runs out? Will I still be able to handle the bike on the trail? 

E-Bikes are supported by a SyncDrive motor technology, which provides support on the most challenging terrain. And we wouldn’t subdue our guests to long rides that the E-Bike battery couldn’t  handle. But, it’s still a question our guests ask and still a possibility when talking about an energy supported piece of equipment. So you’re on the trail with your guide and the battery runs out? What to do now? No worries, you can still pedal as if it were any regular bike. Is it easy? Well, that depends on what terrain you are riding, but you’ll still be able to get back safely with the support of your guide.

Amazing trip! We joined the Torres Del Paine 7 day O trek tour - note that this tour is not a complete O Trek but skipping the part from Camp Frances to Las Torres, which worked in our favour as our holiday is limited and we won’t miss much. Our guide, Debbie was knowledgeable and amicable, and very passionate about hiking. Unfortunately I fell sick during the hike and wished to leave a day earlier than planned. Debbie and Chile Nativo quickly rearranged transportation for us and was very helpful. Throughout the whole process Chile Nativo was very responsive. We had a memorable journey and I would highly recommend Chile Nativo.

I booked the independent, self-guided Torres Del Paine trek with Chile Nativo’s help and was so glad I did. When I looked to book on my own, everything was all reserved in Torres Del Paine and Chile Nativo was the only agency that could help me find a spot still. To still be able to go on the trip when I wanted to go, to not have to spend so much time planning all the logistics, to get a local’s recommendations on the best way to do the trek…but STILL get to do the trek on my own was amazing and worth every penny. In particular Paolina at the agency was incredibly helpful. I would recommend this agency to anyone looking to hike in Torres del Paine.

Hiking in Torres with Pepa is like walking with your smartest and wisest friend. She has an incredible depth of knowledge in everything from mycology to government, from geology to history. She is fiercely passionate about conservation and our planet and has dedicated her life to making our world a better place. Our two porters Filipe and Bastian were both incredibly strong and highly professional. Always in the know on where to set up the tent, they picked the best spot in every site we were at. Also, they were an absolute blast to hang out with after the long days hiking. I cannot recommend this particular team highly enough and if you are passionate about the environment, making the world a better place, learning everything there is to know about glaciers, mushrooms, Patagonia, the history of Chile, magma intrusions and edible berries request them by name. Thank you to all three of you for making our experience so special and I hope our paths cross again.
